  1. a trend in sculpture and painting that arose in the 1950s and used simple, typically massive, forms.
  2. an avant-garde movement in music characterized by the repetition of very short phrases that change gradually, producing a hypnotic effect.
     

 

Minimalism is an often deceptive form of art that is more challenging to create than its products might suggest: Your quest Visitor,  should you choose to accept it, is to create an powerful, dynamic, and unique design that effectively communicates an abstract design element from the story of choice.

Important: Documentation of your entire “Design Process” will be required for this quest. Please make a new PROJECT PAGE titled “Minimalism Poster” where you will record your findings and creations. This new page should be placed under your Project Menu page.

     Design Process STAGE 1: UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM

1. Document what the actual goal of your design is: do you understand the “problem”?

  • What is a minimalist design?
  • What do you want to learn with this project?
  • What is the goal of your art?

 

     Design Process STAGE 2: Research and Investigate

Always record everything you find: images, ideas, information.  Document all the sites as a cited source or web link in your documentation to give them recognition.

2. Research Minimalist design AND your Story of choice

  • Research your purpose. What could you want to communicate about your story and Why? make a list
  • The more information you have about the people, places, or concept of a project, the more inventive and creative you can be as you brainstorm design ideas.
  • What makes a minimalist poster design successful or even GREAT?

Find your own resources: use classroom books or web resources

Here are a few to get you started:

 

     Design Process STAGE 3: Generate Possible Solutions 

USE YOUR SKETCHBOOK! This stage should be done mostly outside of a computer. Take photos on your phone to post on your project page

3. Brainstorm ideas for visual imagery representing elements of your Book or Movie — Show your brainstorming as idea webs, clouds, lists, found imagery, small sketches of elements (at least 25 ideas, words, elements required)

  • Brainstorm – concepts (what your design is trying to show, say, or communicate)
  • Brainstorm – style, techniques, or even a medium you will use to create the design
  • Brainstorm – colors, objects, patterns, images, or stories that could make a connection to your idea

4. Begin sketching thumbnail ideas for the graphic or layout of your poster. Remember minimalism

  • Sketch at least 8 completely different design solutions in your sketchbook.
  • Thumbnail sketches should be about 4″ sketches in sketchbook
  • Designs should be ORIGINAL though inspired!
  • Consider possible color schemes and fonts even if just in notation.
  • Be aware of size restrictions and page proportions

 

     Design Process STAGE 4: Select and Develop Best Solution

5. Select the best solution

  • notate why you have chosen it
  • Finalize a new detailed sketch of the best solution (not on the computer!)
    • you may need to practice your illustration a bit
  • sketch the composition of entire design plan including Typography, sizes, and Space/location
  • Explore and document possible color schemes
  • Design Typography (beware of obnoxious crazy display fonts, they are often cheesy!)
    • Use Kerning, Tracking, Leading, Contrast!!!
  • How will you create hierarchy of information? (Define what is most important and least important elements of the poster design)

      Design Process STAGE 5: Model and Prototype (Digitally Create)

6. Begin production of your Poster

  • Final Poster must be 24 x 36inches (3600 x 5400 pixels) with a resolution of 150ppi (yeah, we might print them that large)
  • Practice, develop or refine new skills you are exploring.
  • Remember Craftmanship matters. It shows you care!
  • All images and illustrations must be original and follow copyright laws
  • Remember to take in-progress screenshots for your project page –required

 

     Design Process STAGE 6: Test and Evaluate

7. Self-reflect on your design

  • self-reflect and carefully evaluate your successes and difficulties
  • How could you take it further?
  • Ask others for their opinions and document the suggestions whether you agree with them or not.
  • Refine or develop elements of the design that can be improved
  • Consider asking the Captain for a brief In-Progress Critique

 

     Design Process STAGE 7: Produce

8. Turn in the final .JPG and Print

  • Turn file into the captain’s server
  • Get final printed and mounted
  • Finalize Project Page with full self-reflection

COMPLETION: You need a fully completed Behance Page including all scanned sketchbook work with image captions. Turn in your finished artwork to Coulson’s server. 

 

 

When you are finished:

 

Be Proud.

Go find Coulson and have him print your final poster. Fill out a small name tag to tape to the bottom of your poster. They should be next to the Captain’s desk.

When printed hang it at the front of the room.

Get an evaluation form from the Captain to self-evaluate your process and artwork.

Turn in your Evaluation Sheet and claim Mastery.
