Logo and Identity Design
Additional Epic Loot available in Stage 3!
This quest provides you both an opportunity for a logo design challenge and a working for a real world client.
Logo design is a test simplistic abstraction and conceptual design based on research. Are you willing to take a new and open approach to how a logo should be DEVELOPED?
Remember: All Epic Design Quests require documentation of your design process. Be sure you are very familiar with design process before beginning any Epic Quest.
WARNING: Upon accepting this quest you will have a maximum of 21 days to complete the quest. After that deadline the quest will be worth 50%! A client isn’t usually willing to wait even three weeks for refined design options, so don’t expect an extension.
To begin this project now continue on to Stage 2.
Create your new project page ON BEHANCE titled Logo Design. At some point you should change the title to clarify what company’s logo you have designed. Now copy and paste the following as you will need to complete and correctly document all these 7 steps on the your design process:
- Understand the Problem
- Research and Investigate
- Generate Possible Solutions
- Select AND DEVELOP Best Solution
- Model and Prototype (Create)
- Test and Evaluate
- Produce
- Effectively DEVELOP a solution for a logo through your design process
- Utilize abstract communication to create meaning and informed decisions with your logo design
- Create at least one final logo for a real company/client (whether presented to the client or not)
- Develop and expand a basic identity system beyond your logo
- Maintain original graphic illustrations for your logo development (beware of copyright infringement)
- Demonstrate how you used problem solving skills
- Try to learn or improve at least one NEW digital skill for vector design work
Some awesome Logo Design Resources you will want to look through. These are favorites I have found but its only a sampling of what’s out there.
PROJECT REQUIREMENTS & INSTRUCTION
Design Process STAGE 1: UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM
FIRST—Select a client to design a logo for. Select a client from all the options on Crowdspring, or find a client of your own but no fictitious companies & no random companies you want to make a logo for. It must be a client in need of a new logo. Crowdspring is a site the real companies give a real design brief on how they want their new logo to fit their company.
NOW CONSIDER THESE:
- Learn the “Design Brief”
- What does the client need from you?
- Why are logos important?
- What can a logo say about a company?
Design Process STAGE 2: Research and Investigate
Always record all your resources as an active web link or linked image.
Research the industry of your client thoroughly
Previous HRHS Student Logo Designs
- learn about the services, products
- Research the company name: origin, meaning
- Who are their clients
- What look does the client desire
- What themes is the client interested in exploring
Design Process STAGE 3: Generate Possible Solutions
Brainstorm ideas for visual imagery representing elements of your topic — Show your brainstorming as idea webs, clouds, lists, found imagery, small sketches of elements (at least 25 ideas, words, elements required)
- Brainstorm – concepts (meaning)
- Brainstorm – imagery connected to your research
- Brainstorm – style or looks that you might want to emulate
Begin sketching thumbnail ideas for the entire invite.
- Sketch several different images that might be able to be developed into logos
- Designs may start as inspired found imagery but must be developed significantly in the next stage to avoid copyright infringement
- Consider fonts that fit the styles you are going to explore.
- Note that your designs will be vector graphics not pixel so simplification will be key
Design Process STAGE 4: Select and Develop Best Solutions
Ask Coulson about the library resources he has that you SHOULD take a look at.
Select the best solutions and redevelop new sketches of the design in many different ways (this is where you should spend some significant time)
USE the SCAMPER method for develop your idea further. Infuse creativity into new design options develop out of your best original ideas.
- Designs should be ORIGINAL though inspired!
- consider looking at different logo styles as you resketch you logo in 10-20 new versions
- Finalize a new detailed sketch of best solutions
- Look into current logo trends
- sketch the composition of entire design plan
- Focus on possible color schemes
- Document what Principles and Elements you will utilize
- Carefully consider fonts to be used (beware of crazy display fonts, they are often cheesy!)
- How will you create hierarchy of information? (Define what is most important and least important in the design)
Design Process STAGE 5: Model and Prototype (Create)
6. Begin production of your design
- Artwork must be exactly sized (???) with a resolution of 300ppi
- Practice, develop or refine new skills you are exploring.
- Remember Craftmanship matters. It shows you care!
- All images and illustrations must be original and follow copyright laws
- Remember to take in-progress screenshots for you project page–required
Design Process STAGE 6: Test and Evaluate
7. Self-reflect on your design
- self-reflect and carefully evaluate your successes and difficulties
- How could you take it further?
- Ask others for their opinions and document the suggestions whether you agree with them or not.
- Refine or develop elements of the design that can be improved
- Consider asking the Captain for a brief In-Progress Critique
Design Process STAGE 7: Produce
8. Turn in the final .JPG and Print
- Turn file into the captain’s server
