When Worlds Collide – Mixed Media

Mixed Media Photographic Challenge: How can you combine the idea of two different worlds colliding to create visual storytelling and composition through contrast.

  • What does each world represent?
  • Which world is “winning” or taking over?
  • Where do the two worlds connect visually?
  • Is your image conflict, balance, or transformation?

7 steps on the your design process:

  1. Understand the Problem
  2. Research and Investigate
  3. Generate Possible Solutions
  4. Select AND DEVELOP Best Solution
  5. Model and Prototype (Create)
  6. Test and Evaluate
  7. Produce

LEARNING OBJECTIVE:

  • Explore what how contrast of imagery can elevate a composition
  • Use planning and execution of concept to have purpose and a goal before creating
  • Define a clear plan both compositionally and technique
  • Utilize mixed media as a non digital form of artistic technique to build and layer images to build upon your concept
  • Use creative problem solving for an inspired and original solution
  • Explore and demonstrate at least one NEW digital skill (It is not required that you use the skill in your final solution)

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS & INSTRUCTION

Requirements

  1. At Least One Proofsheet
  2. use layering of images or elments of mixed media
  3. use at least one non digital aspect of mixed media creation
  4. combine, connect, or compare two different contrasting worlds/ideas
  5. Must have at least one dominant photograph you shoot
  6. Must use Juxtaposition

Design Process STAGE 1: UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM

1. What are the requirements & What is your piece going to be about

  • What will you communicate?
  • Create two worlds that you could collide in a piece of artwork
  • Clarify what your concept or idea is that you want to communicate. Be Clear, specific, and descriptuve of the two worlds and how they are different. Why do they interest you.
  • Write a 2-3 sentence concept statement about your worlds and what you want to say about them
    • CONSIDER
      • What does each world represent?
      • Which world is “winning” or taking over?
      • Where do the two worlds connect visually?
      • Is your image conflict, balance, or transformation?
  • state what the requirements are for the project

Design Process STAGE 2: Research and Investigate

Document sample imagery, techniques or processes for multi media found online in research

  • research techniques and mediums you could use for a mixed media piece of artwork
  • research techniques of layering
  • Research techniques of connecting
  • research materials to use

Students shold combine:

  • Original photos + found images
  • Magazine cutouts
  • Drawings (pen, marker, ink)
  • Paint (acrylic, watercolor)
  • Transparent materials (tracing paper, plastic)
  • Found materials (fabric, receipts, maps)

TECHNIQUES TO USE

  1. Juxtaposition (must-have)
  • Two clearly different subjects placed together
  • Example: ocean inside a coffee cup
  1. Blending or connecting (Must use)
  • Stitch, sew, staple, disjointed or separated elements together
  • Edges are merged, not just placed side-by-side
  • Use paint, opacity, or drawing to connect images
  1. Scale Manipulation
  • One world dominates or invades the other
  • Example: giant hand over a city
  1. Layering (depth)
  • Foreground / middle / background required
  • Mixed media naturally builds depth through overlapping materials

Design Process STAGE 3: Generate Possible Solutions

3. Brainstorm at least 20 elements

  • Brainstorm imagery that could be associated and combined within your two worlds
  • Brainstorm material or textures
  • Brainstorm techniques for connecting or layering

👉 Mixed media works best when layering and connecting multiple materials to create depth and texture

4. Begin sketching thumbnail ideas for your concept.

  • Sketch at least 4 different rough design solutions
  • ad notes about how the images are building on your specific concept
  • use found imagery if they fit a technique or style you want to explore

Design Process STAGE 4: Select and Develop Best Solution

5. Select the best solution

  • notate why you have chosen it
  • Finalize a new detailed sketch of best solution
  • detail with images the techniques mediums or materials you plan to use
  • How will you use them
  • Clearly define how you are conecting your two worlds and HOW THAT FITS YOUR CONCEPT FROM STAGE 1

Design Process STAGE 5: Model and Prototype (Create)

6. Begin production of your design

  •
  • Practice, develop or refine new technical skills you are exploring.
  • Remember Craftmanship matters. It shows you care!
  • Maintain originality
  • Document your thoughts of difficulties, failures, and challenges
  • RESHOOT when necessary

Design Process STAGE 6: Test and Evaluate

7. Self-reflect on your design

  • self-reflect and carefully evaluate your successes and failures
  • How could you take it further or improve?
  • Do a Self-Critique and ask others as well
  • Consider asking the Captain for a brief In-Progress Critique

     Design Process STAGE 7: Produce

8. Turn in the final .JPG and Print

  • Photograph your completed composition. Develop and crop this photo fully as needed for finished and refined presentation of your artwork as a digital file.
  • Title final images as: lastname_firstname_Collide.jpg
  • Submit your Final Artwork to the Canvas assignment
  • Turn in your sketchbook
  • Finalize sketchbook Page with full self-reflection
    • successes
    • struggles
    • improvements
    • what you learned
  • Complete our grade sheet
