Visitor, I am so excited we are finally Designing.
In this one typography is the name of this game now that you have some base skills with the pen tool.
You will find many sub-quests within this quest. I realize that many of you are just tasting design, and Illustrator specifically, for the first time. There are lots of pieces to the puzzle that are necessary to be comfortably prepared. While many of these extra quests are optional, they are also encouraged to expand your design options.

Visitor, as you work through this quest you are now being held to a higher standard. We are now beginning to combine design skills with our digital software skills.
TYPOGRAPHY! Its sounds boring, or maybe even simple but any designer worth squat know how important AND DIFFICULT great typography is in design.
Typographic design is both challenging and an essential skill to all graphic designers. Without type our world wouldn’t be the same. It’s the most common element in nearly all designs you encounter as a graphic designer. Take your time with these lessons. Follow the directions carefully and then try going on your own.
To complete the Custom Logotype quest you should:
1 Follow along with all videos exactly, recreating the logotype in the example (but use your name). I realize I made this video too long, so make sure to pause it often to experiment with the techniques on your design. NOTE: The next stage will prompt you to make your own original logo after this one is done.
(If Myriad Pro is not available on your computer please use Helvetica neue instead)
Creating a Custom Logotype PLEASE PAUSE AS NECESSARY!
Create a new Behance project titled “Logotype”. Document the stages (images) of your Logotype creation and note what kerning, leading, and contrast have to do with your design. Then you may move on to the next stage of this quest.
READ THIS ENTIRE STAGE
BEFORE BEGINNING YOUR OWN PERSONAL ORIGINAL DESIGN
Mastery for this stage is optional but this is where you design a NEW ORIGINAL logo of your own…and it’s also where you get the real loot for this quest.
Look at what your peers have made for their logotypes in previous semester
2 Next, you need to create a new logotype design for your own personal design company in a field of your choice. (ei photography, designs, design firm, graphics etc.) Create a company name that includes your first name, last name, or initials. You will need to focus on design simplicity as “suggested” in the Morgue File Quest.
What exactly are you creating?
While typography is an essential element to your logotype, know that I want you to create a new graphic or illustrative elements as well. Now is where your creativity will take effort and where effort will require more than one simple idea.
Type vs. Graphic...We want both.
Please use your sketchbook to sketch and develop ideas before going into the computer. These ideas will be more original as they are not restricted by your skills in Illustrator. Brainstorm and research as suggested in the Creative Process above. Remember that while those logos you saw in the morgue are amazing many of them have used several other Illustrator Tools available to them. I would encourage you to take some time and introduce yourself to some of the several tools available in Illustrator. I would specifically suggest these three short tool quests, though there are lots more:
- Shapebuilder
- basic shapes (rectangle and ellipse)
- Align
Optional Outside Quest: Lynda.com account required: Logo Lounge – quest not required but it would be very valuable in your design personal logotype design (course is 101 minutes long)
Take at least one full class period to explore how far you can take your logotype and remember: This is a quest on TYPOGRAPHY. Don’t forget about Type as you develop your original logotype. Take many in-progress screenshots to show development on your project page.
And as always’ “remember in the CIA “design is never finished” How far can you push yours.
Mastery: Document your Mastery thoroughly on your Logotype Project Post. You should include photos (use your phone) of any sketchbook pages you worked on as well as your thoughts, ideas, inspirations, and reflections.
Use multiple images with captions on your post.
If you prefer to photograph your sketchbooks to upload as sample of your design process work.
Posting imagery lessons located in Blog Imagery 101 Quest if review is needed.
Check in with the Captain at some point before completing this stage. Upon his approval, save the Illustrator file and turn it into the Captain’s Server while also posting the completed logo at the top of your behance page as the Cover image.
